Bloom Market
Painting flower pots and planting creative seeds with visitors to a local market
In 2024, Scadding Court Community Centre hosted me to facilitate a community arts activation at Stackt Market, a spring showcase for small local entrepreneurs, in the heart of the city. Set against the lively backdrop of the market, our initiative invited participants to engage in a hands-on artistic experience.
The table adjacent to us was hosting a seed giveaway.
We distributed terra cotta flower pots and encouraged individuals of all ages to sit, paint, and unleash their creativity. Over the course of the event, 50 participants—ranging from adults and teens to small children—joined in, transforming simple pots into unique works of art. The diversity of participants highlighted the universal appeal of creative expression, with some showcasing remarkable artistic talent, while others discovered hidden skills they didn’t know they possessed. For many, the experience was a joyful reminder of the power of art to inspire confidence and self-discovery, while the youngest participants delighted in the sheer fun of blending as many colors as possible.
By offering a space for individuals to connect, create, and share, the event underscored the importance of accessible arts programming in fostering inclusivity and well-being. The painted pots, now blooming with plants from the seed giveaway, serve as lasting symbols of the day’s collective creativity and the enduring impact of community-driven initiatives. Through this project, Scadding Court Community Centre reaffirmed its commitment to enriching lives and empowering individuals through the arts, leaving a lasting impression on participants and passersby alike.
